The words we speak carry so much more information than their literal meaning alone. Language communicates emotion, cultural nuance, identity, and belonging. When someone reads content in their mother tongue, they don’t just understand it. They fühlen it.

Now, we know what you might be thinking: “Our site is in English. Everyone speaks English. What more do we need?”

That’s an assumption many people make but it’s a costly one that risks pushing away a big fraction of your audience.

As of 2026, there are approximately 1.5 billion people worldwide who speak English either as a first or second language. That sounds like a lot, until you consider what it really means: more than 6 billion people don’t. English has become the default language of the internet, a global lingua franca that dominates digital spaces. But defaulting to English isn’t the same as being accessible. And for nonprofits and charities whose mission is built on inclusion, that distinction matters enormously.

When your website only speaks English, you’re not just missing an opportunity. You’re sending a message (unintentionally) that some people belong and others don’t.

A multilingual website changes that. It says: we see you, we value you, and we’ve made the effort to meet you where you are. For nonprofits and charities, that’s not just good web design. It’s a direct expression of your values. A multilingual website demonstrates your commitment to inclusion and accessibility.

Why multilingual websites matter for nonprofits

Your mission doesn’t have language barriers and your website shouldn’t either.

The UK is increasingly multilingual, with over 24.5 million adults (36%) fluent in more than one language, while 21% of children in schools are multilingual.

Consider this: over 300 languages are spoken in London alone. Across the UK, significant populations speak Polish, Urdu, Arabic, Bengali, Romanian, Somali, and dozens of other languages as their primary tongue. Many of these people are precisely the individuals your organisation exists to serve. Or, they are the donors, volunteers, and partners who could help you serve them better.

The good news is that building a multilingual website has never been more accessible. AI-powered translation has transformed what’s possible, even on a charity budget.

Three compelling reasons to go multilingual:

1. Reach the people you serve

Many visitors to your website may not speak English or would prefer to communicate in another language.

For example, if you are a mental health organisation that serves diverse communities you don’t want to create additional barriers to accessing your services. Language proficiency shouldn’t be a blocker. Showing linguistic adaptability also demonstrates cultural competence that builds trust with marginalised communities.

Meeting people where they are linguistically shows respect and genuine commitment to creating a positive impact for everyone.

2. Expand your donor base

The donation funnel is critical for many charity and nonprofit websites.

This is a space where connection and clarity really matter. The donation funnel is centred around emotional storytelling and speaking in someone’s preferred language helps them to connect more with your mission. Donors want to give in their own language and diaspora communities often support causes in their heritage countries.

A multilingual website also aids corporate partnerships with international companies as well as EU funding and international grants that often require multilingual presence. It builds credibility with funders who value diversity and inclusion, and sets you apart from competitors who only operate in English.

3. Demonstrate inclusivity and accessibility

An accessible website is a multingual website.

Language access is a core part of digital accessibility. A multilingual nonprofit website shows your values align with your mission. A website that is available in different languages signals that you’re professional and globally minded.

A website that is only available in one language results in losing potentianl donations, reduces service uptake from communities that you aim to serve, missed partnership opportunities, and a limited volunteer pool.

Real-world success stories: A nonprofit that went multilingual

SafePlace Greece: Refugee Support Organisation

We partnered with SafePlace International to re-vamp their digital presence through comprehensive website management to promote their global programs and impact. SafePlace’s previous charity website was thin on the ground. Limited information and a confusing circular navigation left users hanging – not hungering for change. It was time to re-tell their story.

As part of this transformation process, we created a new multilingual site for SafePlace Greece that is available in both English and Greek. SafePlace Greece is a support network and donation hub that provides vital services for the LGBTQIA+ refugees & single mothers in Greece.

For the main website content, we leveraged the TranslatePress‘ AI translation to do the “heavy lifting” translation from English to Greek. We also used FundraiseUp (which has its own multilingual features) to ensure the whole donation funnel resonated with Greek-speaking donors.

For SafePlace Greece, a multi-lingual site meant the organisation could speak to both local people and potential donors, as well as to their international audience and prospective funders.

Multilingual website: SafePlace Greece homepage

The results:

+19% increase in average engagement time per active user

+19% increase in returning users

Improved trust and engagement with local donors and funders

Discover more about our work with SafePlace International.

Which languages should your nonprofit website offer?

When deciding which languages your website should offer, it’s important to start with data, not assumptions.

Analyse your current audience and community:

Who are your current beneficiaries and where are they from?

What languages do your staff and volunteers speak?

Which communities does your mission serve?

Look at your website analytics: where is your traffic coming from?

Survey your email list or social media followers

Our recommendation: Start small, expand strategically

Begin with 1-2 languages most relevant to your target audience and mission

Test engagement and conversion before expanding

You can always add more languages as budget allows

Quality over quantity: it’s better to do one language excellently than three poorly

Languages we commonly translate for nonprofits:

English ↔ German (EU funding, German donor base)

English ↔ French (International development, francophone communities)

English ↔ Spanish (Latin American programs, Spanish-speaking diaspora)

English ↔ Arabic (5th most spoken language worldwide)

Additional languages available on request

Why not just use the Google Translate widget?

It’s the obvious question. Google Translate is free, instant, and familiar. So why not just add the widget to your site and move on?

For casual, personal use it works well enough. But for a nonprofit website where trust and credibility matter, it has some meaningful limitations worth understanding.

It’s invisible to search engines

Google Translate is terrible for SEO.

When it renders a page in another language, it does so dynamically in the user’s browser. Search engines crawl your server, not a user’s browser, which means they never see the translated content. Your French or Arabic pages simply don’t exist as far as Google is concerned.

A properly implemented multilingual website gives each language its own URL (for example, yoursite.org/fr/ for French), its own meta descriptions, and its own place in your sitemap. This means search engines can index your translated content, helping new visitors find you in their own language—not just visitors who already found you in English.

Translation quality is inconsistent

Google Translate handles straightforward content well but it really struggles with nuance. The carefully crafted fundraising appeal, the sector-specific terminology, the warm and mission-driven tone you’ve worked hard to develop.

It translates without context, which means your brand voice can become inconsistent or flat in ways that are difficult to spot unless you speak the language yourself.

It can interfere with forms and functionality

The widget works by modifying your page content in real time, which can cause issues with donation forms, navigation elements, and interactive features. These potential problems can have a big impact on pages where you’re asking visitors to take action.

Donation forms stop working correctly. Fields might not accept input properly, validation messages can disappear or appear in the wrong language, and payment processing can fail entirely—right at the moment someone is trying to give you money.

Navigation breaks. Dropdown menus, interactive elements, and JavaScript-powered components frequently malfunction when the widget processes the page.

Images and buttons lose their labels. Alt text, button text, and form labels can become scrambled, creating a confusing and inaccessible experience.

Page layouts distort. Text in different languages takes up different amounts of space. German words, for example, are typically 30% longer than their English equivalents. The widget doesn’t account for this, meaning text overflows boxes, buttons stretch oddly, and your carefully designed layout falls apart.

It signals a lack of investment

There’s something subtler at work too, and it matters enormously for charities and nonprofits.

Trust is built through details. Visitors from other linguistic backgrounds recognise a Google Translate widget for what it is: a shortcut. For communities that may already feel underserved, or donors evaluating whether to trust your organisation with their money, a properly translated website communicates genuine commitment in a way a widget simply doesn’t.

The alternative is more affordable than you might think

A dedicated translation plugin like TranslatePress stores translations properly in your database, generates real URLs for each language, and works seamlessly with your existing design and functionality.
